چکیده

[1] We perform a series of Observing System Experiments (OSEs), where components of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) are systematically withheld from a data assimilating ocean reanalysis. We assess the relative importance of Argo temperature (T) and salinity (S) profiles, sea-surface temperature (SST) and altimetric sea-level anomalies (SLA) for constraining upper-ocean T and S properties and mesoscale variability of SLA in an eddy resolving ocean reanalysis in the Australian region. Each OSE is assessed by comparing modelled fields with assimilated and withheld observations. We show that each observation type brings complementary information to the GOOS, and demonstrate that while there is some redundancy for representing broad-scale circulation, mesoscale circulation requires all observation types to be assimilated. The role of ARGO temperature and salinity data in the ECMWF operational ocean analysis system

A new operational ocean analysis system (system 3 or S3) has been implemented at ECMWF. It consists of two analysis streams: (i) a historical reanalysis from 01/01/1959 which is continuosly maintained up to 11 days behind real time and is used to initialize seasonal forecasts, and (ii) an early delivery ocean analysis, produced daily in real time, used to initialize the monthly forecasts. The S...

Eddy-resolving ocean circulation in the Asian–Australian region inferred from an ocean reanalysis effort

The first global ocean reanalysis with focus on the Asian–Australian region was performed for the period October 1992 to June 2006. The 14-year experiment assimilated available observations of altimetric sea-level anomaly, satellite SST and quality-controlled in situ temperature and salinity profiles from a range of sources, including field surveys and the Argo float array. This study focuses o...

The Dependence of Short-range Ocean Forecasts on Satellite Altimetry

Short-range ocean forecast and reanalysis systems routinely combine observations from satellite altimetry, satellite sea surface temperature (SST), and in situ temperature and salinity, to initialise global and regional ocean models. The most critical observation type for eddy-resolving applications is arguably satellite altimetry. To quantify the impact of satellite altimetry observations on a...

Progress of North Pacific mode water research in the past decade

This article reviews the progress in research on North Pacific mode waters of the past decade from the physical oceanographic perspective. The accumulation of satellite altimeter sea surface height data, the rapid growth of the Argo profiling float array, and the advancement in eddy-resolving ocean general circulation models have greatly improved the traditional views on the mode waters that we...

Circumpolar response of Southern Ocean eddy activity to a change in the Southern Annular Mode

[1] Analysis of satellite altimeter data reveals anomalously high Eddy Kinetic Energy (EKE) in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) during the period 2000–2002. Around 2–3 years earlier (1998), the circumpolar eastward wind stress (as quantified by the Southern Annular Mode; SAM) showed a significant positive peak, and we have shown previously that the ACC peaked around 1998 in response. An ...
